The play schools are meant to fill that gap. The focus is to create a platform where children can sing, dance and play and at the same time learn some basics to get them prepared for the ashram schools.

The schools are started by PS Ajay Kumar, who has been working with the tribals in the region for land rights and other developmental issues for the tribals.

Muskaan works with 6 slums in Bhopal to provide the access to education for the children. Most of the children are first time learners in their families. They do rag picking to provide additional income to their families and later during the day they attend classes at one of the muskaan centers.

Currently all the classes are run in rented places and in every 2 to 3 years, they have to look for new premises because of increase in rent or some of the owners do not like the children from slums staying there.

The planned facility provides the permanent place for all of the education activities for the children and also a safe environment, specially for girls. Apart from class rooms and the hostel, in the facility it is also planned to have a computer room and a library, so that these children get the same exposure as other children.

Project Partner(s): Vitono Haralu
Project Type: Capex / Infrastructure
Primary Focus: health and cleanliness
Secondary Focus: girls
Area: Rural

Details:
Poilwa village is about 65 km from Nagaland state capital Kohima (North eastern India). As the village is surrounded by hills, there is no regular transportation between the village and Kohima. The village has total 1.200 households and there are two primary schools. One primary school is in old part of the village, which is about 2 km from the main village. The main village has one primary school and one middle school (up to class 8).

As there are not enough teachers in primary school, the school has shifted to the middle school campus and the middle school teachers also teach primary school children. The toilet to be built is for the primary and middle school in the main village.

There are total 12 teachers and about 140 children in the school, including the children from Baalwadis (Kindergarten).
In the middle school (class 4 to class 8), there are 52 boys and 38 girls. Currently there is one toilet for middle school girls and one for the primary school girls. Considering the amount of girl children, the existing facilities are not sufficient and children are facing difficulties because of this. Hence was proposed to construct additional toilet, which can be used by primary and middle school girls.

Asha has contributed € 1 500 which is the estimated cost for building one toilet. The school has more needs like fixing the windows, which is necessary since it gets cold in the winters in this area. When the building of the toilet has started we will consider further needs.
