Details:
Poilwa village is about 65 km from Nagaland state capital Kohima (North eastern India). As the village is surrounded by hills, there is no regular transportation between the village and Kohima. The village has total 1.200 households and there are two primary schools. One primary school is in old part of the village, which is about 2 km from the main village. The main village has one primary school and one middle school (up to class 8).

As there are not enough teachers in primary school, the school has shifted to the middle school campus and the middle school teachers also teach primary school children. The toilet to be built is for the primary and middle school in the main village.

There are total 12 teachers and about 140 children in the school, including the children from Baalwadis (Kindergarten).
In the middle school (class 4 to class 8), there are 52 boys and 38 girls. Currently there is one toilet for middle school girls and one for the primary school girls. Considering the amount of girl children, the existing facilities are not sufficient and children are facing difficulties because of this. Hence was proposed to construct additional toilet, which can be used by primary and middle school girls.

Asha has contributed € 1 500 which is the estimated cost for building one toilet. The school has more needs like fixing the windows, which is necessary since it gets cold in the winters in this area. When the building of the toilet has started we will consider further needs.

Allikuzhi School

Allikuzhi school is also a remote school and is about 6 kms from another one of our supported schools, Placepalayam. Asha Chennai has been providing one teacher for the school who also helps with teaching computers at that school. The toilets in the school are not functional because of damaged sewage system. Children either have to go home or relieve themselves in open, this is not only inconvenience for the girl children but also not safe.

Asha Frankfurt sanctioned the funds to repair the existing toilets and also construct additional
toilets for girls.

Cost of the project: € 1 600

Placepalayam (Thiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu)

This project is a collaboration with Asha Chennai.

Placepalyam school is located in a remote village in the Thiruvallur district, about 70 kms from Chennai, the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Asha Chennai has been working with this school since 2006 to improve the facilities and strengthening the schooling system. They provided additional teacher for primary school as there were not enough teachers. They also provided facilities like library, educational materials, stationary, computer lab, teacher trainings etc. The primary school has total 65 children out of that 32 are girls.

The school does not have separate toilet for girls, which leads to inconvenience for the girls and in some cases they have to drop out of the school. To solve the problem, Asha Frankfurt funded the construction of the toilet.

Project Scope: Asha Frankfurt is supporting construct of toilet facilities for girl students.

Cost of the project: € 1 600 (completed)

The school is associated with Church of South India and is a government aided school. The running expenses (teachers salaries, midday meals etc) are provided by the government.

When one of our volunteer Nari visited the school, the school toilets (for teachers, girls and boys) were not in use because the sewage system was broken for some time. Asha Frankfurt provided funding for repairing the sewage systems and providing additional toilets for girls and boys. Asha frankfurt also repaired the kitchen roof which was broken. The project was monitored by Asha Chennai.
